Newborns enter the world with a surprisingly sophisticated ability to hear. Although their auditory system continues developing after birth, babies can respond to sounds almost immediately—and some sounds are already familiar.
During pregnancy, a developing baby is exposed to voices, rhythms, and sounds from both inside and outside the body. By birth, newborns can demonstrate preferences for familiar voices, particularly voices they heard repeatedly before delivery.
For Newborn Care Specialists, nannies, and postpartum doulas, understanding newborn hearing is more than an interesting developmental fact. Voice, conversation, singing, and responsive interaction can become simple but meaningful parts of everyday newborn care.
A newborn's auditory experience doesn't begin in the delivery room.
The developing auditory system becomes functional before birth, allowing the fetus to experience sound during pregnancy.
But the womb isn't silent.

Professional newborn care isn't about doing more.
It's about understanding more about what is already happening.
Understanding newborns means looking beyond feeding and sleep.
Professional caregivers benefit from understanding sensory development, reflexes, neurological maturation, communication, feeding behavior, sleep physiology, safety, and the ways newborns interact with their environment.
