What Makes Us So Unique? The answer might surprise you!

People often ask me what it is that makes Newborn Care Solutions unique.  What sets us apart from other training companies out there. Even “why” they should take our program over others. I hear these and similar questions nearly every day. And sure, there are the standard answers: our training is designed and tailored specifically for the experienced nanny or childcare provider. We respect that you already know the basics and take you deeper into the material because we get right to the heart of it with our training, even at our Foundational level. We teach you the core of what you need to know to be a really good Newborn Care Specialist, but we teach it deeper and back it up with credible science. We also work hard to stay on top of new research, trends, and cultural changes, bringing new information continually to the forefront and making sure our students have access to it.  We also offer more training options than any other program out there, equipping those students who have the goal of being the best of the best to do just that through our year-long Elite and Master NCS programs. These Newborn Care Specialists are in such demand that they are working in the most sought-after jobs in the country and are now being recognized around the world. We have worked hard to create these learning opportunities for those who want them. And all these things are great—and they do make us unique for sure, and I am proud of what we have accomplished and continue to push towards. But I recently read an article my husband shared with me and it hit me that all these things are great, but they are not what truly makes us unique. What truly makes us unique is what we value and how we translate that to our students. I want to share more about that article and what I learned from it. (The ROI of Compassion, Success Magazine, April 2017).

I love this quote by Herb Kelleher, the co-founder of Southwest Airlines (one of my favorite airlines to fly and I fly them a lot!) that was shared in that article. Herb says “Leading an organization is much about the soul as it is about systems. Effective leadership finds its source in understanding. Unless a leader has an awareness of humanity, sensitivity towards the hopes and aspirations of those he leads, and the capacity to analyze the emotional forces that motivate conduct, he will be unable to produce and be successful regardless of how often other incentives are given.”

This resonated with me. The heart of what he said was understanding, awareness, and sensitivity. These words are not something you often expect from a leader of one of the most successful airline companies in aviation history, and yet they are the core of what SWA has built itself on, and they resonate for a reason. He leads a huge company. I “lead” our students at Newborn Care Solutions via training and they in turn “lead” new parents through the early steps of parenthood. But those core traits of understanding, awareness, and sensitivity carry through each of these opportunities for leadership. From the one on one in the middle of the night with a scared new parent to a student who is nervous to let go of the security of a daytime nanny job and take the leap into a full transition to Newborn Care, those same principles apply to what our students do with families and I do with our students. And the thing these all have in common is that they show compassion for people. For where they are, what they want, and what fears they may have in getting there. And when we show people compassion, it allows them to know three main things—that we care for them, that we want to help them, and that they can trust us. Because people innately know these three things, it allows them to learn from us. And I believe that our students know that we have that compassion for them. I believe that is the core of what makes us unique and what makes us stand out to them as the right program for them. They know that we care for them.

I hear that regularly from my students “Tonya, I know your goal for me is that I will achieve whatever I want to in this industry—you want me to be the very best that I can be—you want me to succeed” And that is SO true. It is my goal that every student who takes our course achieves what they want to achieve. For each person, that is going to look different, but for every one of them, I want them to achieve it and I am going to do my best to help them get there. And they know it. And because they know I care about them, it leads to the next step: they know I can help them get there.  Whether it is because I teach them something valuable about helping a baby, about making sure their website is mobile-enabled, coaching them through a high-level interview, or making sure that they are directed to experts beyond me, I am doing everything I can to help them. And because they know I care, and that I can help them achieve their goals and dreams, they know they can trust me. They know I have their best interests at heart and that when I share something with them, whether it is education, advice, or resources, that I am sharing with them the best I have to offer and they can trust that. And that I do it intentionally and purposefully, with their goals and their best interests in mind, not mine.

These things lead to students who feel that their time and their money were well spent with us. And that also means that in turn, they are likely sharing those same unique traits with the families they serve. And when a new parent knows you care, knows you can help, and trusts you with the most precious thing in the world to them—their newborn baby, there is no greater feeling in the world.

I have come to believe that this is truly what makes us unique—our ability to care, to help, and to be trusted and in turn, that ability to pass that on to the families that are fortunate enough to have our students in their homes.

If you resonate with this and are interested in learning more about what Newborn Care Solutions can offer you and your career as a nanny or Newborn Care Specialist, please visit our website or shoot us an email.  We would love to work with you if newborns and new families are your passion!
